Too Many Cameras?
In a recent Rasmussen poll taken after the Boston bombings, people were asked about the use of security cameras. Did they think that the government should add more cameras in public places? The poll showed that 70% of Americans favored public surveillance cameras.
The government argues that they will and do increase public safety and help to catch suspects involved in crimes. Of course, the government wants to add more and more cameras and use their facial recognition software along with them. Give the government an inch and they will want more and more.
Not all are happy: 23% said that cameras violate their privacy. The believe that the government should stay out of their lives. Others believe that the government worries too much about public safety. Some argue that personal freedom and personal privacy is being destroyed with more cameras. They remind proponents that George Orwell's 1984 predicted the obsessive use of cameras by the government when he wrote his novel in the 1930s.
Where do you stand? Do you think cameras make YOU more safe?
